This is a watermill (mullebanga) in the village of Baekjeon-ri. Watermills are of two kinds: the dongchae type, which uses the force of falling water, and the milchae type, which uses the force of flowing water; this mill is of the dongchae type. It has 56 troughs into which water briefly collects before falling, and its wheel measures 250 cm in diameter and 67 cm in width. Water is drawn from a weir about 50 m away, built by damming the stream to hold back its flow, and above the weir lies a yongso, a pool where groundwater wells up, giving the mill excellent conditions for a plentiful water supply. Whereas most watermills carry only a single pounding frame, here, thanks to the abundant water, two frames are installed side by side, facing in different directions, so that the pestles inside the mill house rise and fall in turn to pound the grain. The mill house measures two bays across the front and one bay in depth; its walls are wooden boards, and its roof is thatched with the inner stalks of hemp. There is no exact record of its construction, but it is said to have been built towards the end of the 19th century, when six such mills originally stood together in the area; today only this one survives. The mill house itself was newly rebuilt in 1992.
