Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA seondol is a long natural stone or a large rock, only partly shaped, that is set upright as a monument or object of worship. This seondol, standing on the mountain above Sangipseok-ri village, is a rectangular block of granite 264 cm high and 66 cm wide, with a bodhisattva figure carved on its front face. A folktale is told about it, that those with a good heart are rewarded while those who do wrong are punished. In the Goryeo period there lived a rich man notorious for his stinginess, but his daughter-in-law alone had a kind and gentle heart. One day a monk called at the house to ask for alms; the rich man treated him harshly, but the daughter-in-law readily gave alms. Grateful, the monk told her that the house would soon turn into a pond, and told her to follow him and never look back. Unable to put her family and possessions out of her mind, the daughter-in-law looked back, and at that very spot she turned to stone and became the seondol. The maker and date of the stone are unknown, but for hundreds of years, every year on the first day of the second lunar month, villagers are said to have collected money, held a village rite (dangje), and prayed for their wishes there.
