Andong Uichon-dong Thatched House Dotomarijip

This is a thatched farmhouse of the dotomarijip type that once stood in Uichon-dong, Andong. The exact date of its construction is not known; it was moved and rebuilt at its present site in 1976 because of the construction of the Andong Dam. Unlike a typical farmhouse, in which the cattle shed, kitchen, main room and upper room are arranged in a single straight line, in this house the upper room is attached to one side of the kitchen as a "jungbang" (middle room). Because this layout resembles the shape of a dotomari, the warp beam of a traditional loom, the house is called a "dotomarijip." The dotomarijip, together with the kkachigumeongjip ("magpie-hole house") and the bongdangjip, is one of the distinctive house types found among the folk houses of this region.
