제구 · 喪輿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn implement used to carry a body to the grave during a funeral. Simple in form yet strikingly colourful, this bier has its body wrapped in strips of five-coloured cloth and hung with metal ornaments. Bells called yoryeong are attached at the four corners so that they ring of their own accord whenever the bier moves, and the roof is painted with pictures in the lively style of folk painting. According to old documentary records, this bier was made in 1763, the 39th year of King Yeongjo of Joseon. It was raised with difficulty through funds jointly collected by the villages of Sinhyo and Hahyo in Seogwipo, and was used by the two villages together; it is now kept and displayed at the Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum.
