Samcheong-dong Owijanggimchunyeong House
삼청동오위장김춘영가옥 · 三淸洞 五衛將 金春榮 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in the 1890s by Kim Chun-yeong, who in the late Joseon period held the military rank of owijang (五衛將). The owi were the central military units of the Joseon dynasty, and the owijang commanded them. The present building was moved from its original site in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, and restored in a hanok village; it comprises an outer gate quarters, a sarangchae (men's quarters), and an anchae (women's quarters). The sarangchae projects forward in line with the gate quarters and is made up of a reception room, a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), and a side room. The anchae has a ㄷ-shaped (U-shaped) plan, following the typical house structure of the Seoul region: the daecheong sits at the centre, with a side room to its right and, to its left, the main room, kitchen, wooden floor, and storeroom. Just inside the gate, to the left, is a single-bay gatekeeper's room. Overall the house shows a modest style, though the unusual construction of the wall behind the main room lends it a further touch of formality.
