This house, standing in the Ilsan new town, was named for the chestnut trees once abundant in the area, which were used to build it. Not only the main structural timbers — the columns, main beam, and rafters — but also finishing elements such as the wall studs and window and door frames were made of chestnut wood. The house is estimated to have been built before the first half of the 19th century. Centred on a courtyard, the house is arranged with a ㄱ-shaped (L-shaped) anchae (main quarters) to the south and a straight (一-shaped) building to the north, linked by a wall so that the thatched roof coils around them like a wound rope. At the centre of the thatched roof is a round opening to the sky, and on the ground beneath it, below the stone platform, a somewhat larger round yard is formed; this was designed so that rain or snowmelt dripping from the eaves would collect there rather than overflowing into the kitchen or elsewhere. The frame of the anchae is built as a pyeongsaryang (平四梁): a main beam laid across the columns and topped with four purlins. This frame structure is common in Gyeonggi-do and is used mainly for thatched roofs that do not require a ridge beam. The chestnut-wood columns still bear the rough marks of the axe and adze used to shape them, and the rafters are irregularly arranged, showing the simple, unadorned character typical of a commoner's house.
