Hagindang Hall
학인당 · 學忍堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was the home of Baek Nak-jung (白樂中), renowned for his filial piety. Emperor Gojong, in recognition of his filial conduct, granted him the official title of Seunghullang. After Baek Nak-jung's death, to make his filial devotion widely known, the house was named Hagindang, taking the character 忍 ("patience"/"endurance") from his pen name, Injae. A plaque honouring Baek Nak-jung's filial piety was also hung on the sotdaemun, the tall gate with a raised central bay built above the main entrance. Hagindang is a representative building of Jeonju's hanok preservation district, a traditional-style structure that carries on the building techniques of the late Korean Empire period, and a typical example of how, after the collapse of the Joseon Dynasty, the architectural style of the royal court came to be adopted in the houses of the upper class.
