Andong Togyedonggyenam Historic House
안동토계동계남고택 · 安東土溪洞溪南故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of the Gyenam branch, founded by Yi Gwi-yong, the eighth-generation descendant of Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye), who settled in this village. It is not known exactly when it was built, but on the evidence of its style it is presumed to date from the 1800s. The house is called "Gyenamdaek," meaning "house south of the stream," because it stands south of Hagye in Dosan-myeon. The present building was moved to its current site in 1975, after the original site was submerged by the construction of Andong Dam. It has a floor plan seven kan wide at the front and seven kan deep, forming a square (ㅁ-shaped) layout. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, whose roofline resembles the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side, and the spacing between its pillars is wider than in other buildings built at the same period. This hanok preserves well the general house style typical of the Andong region.
