Yongsumaeulbangsatap No. 1
용수마을방사탑1호 · 용수마을防邪塔1호

This is the northern of a pair of bangsatap standing side by side, north and south, facing the sea in front of Yongsu Village. A bangsatap is a stone tower raised communally by a village where an ominous sign appeared in a particular direction, or where the geomantic energy of the land was considered weak; it is an object of folk belief meant to keep out impurity and evil and so bring peace to the village. The bangsatap of this village were built to reinforce the weak energy coming from the direction of the sea; both towers bear, on their summit, a stone shaped like a bird's beak, which is why they are also known as 'Maejujegi.' This tower in particular is also called 'Saewontap,' because it was built on a rock outcrop known as 'Saewon'; the stone figure of a bird set on top of the tower faces west.
