A bangsatap is a stone tower raised collectively by a village at a spot where an ill omen had appeared in some direction, or where the land's energy was felt to be weak; it is an object of folk faith meant to block the passage of impurity and evil and keep the village at peace. Sinheung-ri has two bangsatap in all: one near the breakwater of the harbour and one on the north-western shore. This is the one in the southern harbour near the breakwater, also known as 'Keungaetap' or 'Saengitap'. The tower stands on a rock shelf outside the harbour, so its lower part is often submerged in water. The upper part of the tower has a hollow about 50 cm across where birds often perch, said to represent an eumtap (陰塔), a 'yin tower'.
