A bangsatap is a stone tower raised communally by a village where an ominous sign appeared in a particular direction, or where the geomantic energy of the land was considered weak; it is an object of folk belief meant to keep out impurity and evil and so bring peace to the village. There are two bangsatap in Sinheung-ri: one near the harbour breakwater, and one on the beach to the north-west. This is the one standing on the north-western beach, at a spot called 'Saebaekgae,' and it is known as 'Odaritap' or 'Saengitap.' It stands on a rock outcrop, and a long, slender stone set on top of it marks it as a 'yangtap' (陽塔), a 'yang tower.'
