A bangsatap is a stone tower raised collectively by a village community at a point where an ominous sign had been seen in some direction, or where the gi (vital energy) of the terrain was considered weak; it serves as an object of folk belief meant to block the entry of impurity and evil and to keep the village at peace. Four bangsatap stand in a north-south line to the west of the residential area of Mureung-ri. They are said to have been built to reinforce the weak energy of this spot, known as "Apnon," and to ward off impurity and misfortune. This tower is the one at the far left on the south side, and it remains relatively well preserved in its original form. A stone carved in the shape of a human figure stands at its top, said to represent a man, with the face, body and hat clearly distinguished.
