A bangsatap is a stone tower raised collectively by a village at a spot where an ill omen had appeared in some direction, or where the land's energy was felt to be weak; it is an object of folk faith meant to block the passage of impurity and evil and keep the village at peace. To the west of the residential area of Mureung-ri stand four bangsatap arranged north to south. They were built to reinforce the weak energy of this place, known as 'Apnon' ('front paddy'), and to ward off impurity and misfortune, and overall they appear to have been arranged with yin and yang in mind. This tower is one of the four; it is so badly damaged that its original form can no longer be made out.
