Saemiharosandang Hall

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the bonhyangdang (village tutelary shrine) of Donghoecheon village, Bonggae-dong, Jeju City. The shrine enshrines 'Saemiharosando' and is a typical sansindang (mountain-god shrine). It is one of the few places in the Jeju City area where the dang-gut (shrine ritual) has survived, and a sansinnori (mountain-god play) is performed when the dang-gut is held. At the centre of the ritual ground stands an old hackberry tree designated as a protected tree, which serves as the sacred tree (sinmok). To the left of the sacred tree a low, square altar has been built of cement. Bamboo grows around the site, and the surrounding field walls naturally form its enclosure. In terms of form, too, the shrine has well preserved its original shape.
