Hansan Yi Clan Eumaegong Branch Historic House, Yongin
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the house where the descendants of Yi Ja, known by his pen name Eumae (1480–1533), lived. Yi Ja was implicated in the Gimyo Purge of Literati of 1519 and was imprisoned together with Jo Gwang-jo; after retiring from office that December he went into hiding in Eumseong and took for himself the pen name Eumae. It was originally called the "(Former) Eumae Yi Ja Historic House" because it was said to be where Yi Ja had lived, but as the house was rebuilt several times its early-Joseon form disappeared, leaving only a late-Joseon appearance, and in 2014 its name was changed to "Hansan Yi Clan Eumaegong Branch Historic House." Standing in the tiled-roof house village of Jigok-dong, the house originally had an open, ㅁ-shaped layout in which a ㄷ-shaped main building and a straight, ㅡ-shaped servants' quarters enclosed the courtyard, but the servants' quarters have since been lost, leaving only the main building. The main building combines a ㄱ-shaped anchae and a straight, ㅡ-shaped sarangchae into a single structure. This historic house shows the typical form of a middle-class house of the Gyeonggi region in the Joseon period. Yet it also displays distinctive features, such as linking the anchae and sarangchae into one space while still separating their domains by orienting them in different directions, and enshrining the ancestral tablets within the sarangchae itself rather than building a separate shrine. The octagonal pillars used on the front of the sarangchae also show evidence of an exchange of building techniques with neighbouring regions, giving the house value in the history of architecture.
