When first built, this house was a large residence of 99 kan (a traditional unit of floor bays), complete with anchae (women's quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters) and haengnangchae (servants' quarters), but today only the anchae, of about 28 kan, remains. Judging from its various construction techniques, the building is presumed to date from the mid-1800s. Rooms extend to left and right around a daecheong (wooden-floored hall) and an ondol (heated-floor) room, with a jungmunchae (middle-gate section) at the front and the sarangchae standing to the left of the anchae. There is a pond in front of the sarangchae, and the buildings around it are said to have had octagonal stone pillars; these have all disappeared except for the pillars themselves, which have been moved and are now kept at Galsan Middle School. Overall the house forms an open square (teun-mija) plan, and it shows well both the regional character of central Korea and the refined craftsmanship of the late Joseon period.
