Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a large rice chest (dwiju) made for storing rice. Whereas an ordinary rice chest is assembled from logs or planks into a simple box, this one is unusually large and distinctive in shape. It measures 2.1 m in width and 1.8 m in height: planks were joined to form the walls, and rice straw was woven into a roof-like cover placed on top. Jeong Jun-seop, a native of this area, was a great man of wealth in his time, and as the house received hundreds of visitors every day, an ordinary small chest could no longer meet demand, so in the end this oversized rice chest was built in the inner courtyard. Made in the early years of Emperor Gojong's reign in the Joseon period, the chest is large and unusual enough to hold around 70 gama (traditional sacks) of rice, and it stands as a precious piece of folk material through which one can sense the warm hospitality of a household that never treated its many visitors carelessly.
