Gang Clan Old House in Deokgyo-ri, Uiryeong
의령 덕교리 강씨고가 · 宜寧 德橋里 姜氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDeokgyo-ri in Uiryeong-gun was a village where the Jinyang Gang and Jinyang Ha clans lived together, and this house is one of the houses of the Jinyang Gang clan. The anchae (women's quarters) was built by Gang Ji-hwang, the ninth-generation ancestor of the present owner, and is said to be 250–300 years old, but it was repaired in 1989, making its original appearance difficult to discern today. The haengnangchae (servants' quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae are arranged side by side, with large storage sheds on either side of the anchae, showing the residential style of a wealthy farming household of the late Joseon period. The sarangchae, called Saijae, clearly shows from its roof form and construction technique that it served as the men's quarters of an upper-class household; according to surviving records it is said to date from the 1600s, though this cannot be stated with certainty. The gotganchae (storehouse) is large in scale and built with thick stone walls, and is unusual in having only a single octagonal pillar set at its centre. The anchae and sarangchae are completely separate from one another and form an axis in the shape of the character 二, making the house a valuable example for study.
