Yun Il-seon House
윤일선가옥 · 尹日善家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe house stands next to the birthplace of former President Yun Bo-seon and is entered through a sotdaemun (a raised central gate) shared by the Yun family. Its L-shaped anchae (main house) and reverse-L-shaped sarangchae (men's quarters) combine to form a layout in the shape of an open square. In the anchae, the an-bang (main bedroom) and kitchen sit on one side of a wide daecheong (wooden-floored hall), with the geonneonbang (the room across the hall) on the other; the geonneonbang is given variety by a toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) set higher than the daecheong floor. The roof of the sarangchae is a paljak (hipped-and-gabled) roof, whose profile resembles the character 八 (eight), and part of its stone foundation also survives. Although the pillars and other timbers are generally slender, the rooms are relatively spacious, which, together with the style of the central region, illustrates well the characteristics of a late-Joseon hanok (traditional Korean house).
