Gahoedong Han Clan House
가회동한씨가옥 · 嘉會洞 韓氏 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt between the late Joseon period and the early years of Japanese colonial rule, this is a gaeryang hanok, an "improved" traditional house, consisting of a gate house combined with servants' quarters (haengnang) and a main house. In the main house, the sarangchae section and the geonneonbang (side room) section are arranged north to south with a corridor running between them. In the sarangchae section an entrance and hall are placed on the left, and a daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, is set to the southwest to allow a view out onto the garden. To the left of the daecheong is an ondol, heated-floor, room, in front of which is the master's room, with a narrow veranda running around it. Behind the entrance hall are two ondol rooms used as guest rooms, from which a corridor leads to the main wooden-floored hall of the inner quarters (anchae). To the right of this hall is the anbang, the principal room, above which the kitchen is set. Behind the anbang is a small storage room, and to the right of the kitchen a wooden floor is used as a pantry area. To the east of the kitchen is an outer entrance door, and behind the geonneonbang is a back room linked by a narrow veranda. Built as a flat-layout hanok incorporating modern Western- and Japanese-style living features, it can be regarded as a transitional example of the improved house type.
