Located in Dongbu-ri, Goesan-eup, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, this old house is the birthplace of Hong Myeong-hui, pen name Byeokcho (1888–1968), author of the historical novel Im Kkeokjeong. Facing due south, the main house (anchae) has an overall 'ㄷ'-shaped plan, five bays wide and six bays deep, interlocked with a straight gwangchae, a storage wing, so that together they form a 'ㅁ', or enclosed square, shape. The sarangchae, the men's quarters, stands to the left, and the house as a whole appears to draw the natural scenery of the hill behind it into the interior in harmony, creating a compact, intricately arranged living space. It also shows the characteristic architectural style of central-region houses, with a symmetrical floor plan. Hong Beom-sik, pen name Irwan (1871–1910), who served as magistrate of Geumsan County and took his own life in protest at the national humiliation of 1910, grew up in this house. It is also said that in 1919, during the March First Movement, local residents gathered here to plan the Goesan Manse Movement. The house is thought to have been built around 1730, the 8th year of the Yongzheng era, and has historical value both as an old house displaying the features of a late-Joseon central-region yangban residence and as a site linked to the March First Movement — a literary-historical legacy and the valuable former home of an anti-Japanese patriot.
