A yeon is a palanquin used by the king when travelling, and this particular yeon is the one King Sejo of Joseon rode when he came to Magoksa Temple. It has a long pair of carrying poles designed to be borne by four people, topped with a square body richly decorated with carving and covered with a roof. Having survived long years in poor storage, the palanquin has some damaged sections and its colours have faded, as though it still carries the passage of time within it. According to records handed down at Magoksa, King Sejo rode this yeon to the temple in search of Maewoldang Kim Si-seup, and on finding that Maewoldang had already left, he said, 'Since Kim Si-seup has abandoned me, I cannot ride in a palanquin,' and left the yeon he had arrived on at the temple, returning instead on the back of an ox.
