Sandongninamgeunseok
산동리남근석 · 山東里男根石

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA namgeunseok is a natural stone shaped like a male sexual organ, or one carved from rock and set up for that purpose. It served as an object of phallic worship, invoked to pray for all manner of good fortune and for fertility, bountiful harvests and plentiful catches of fish. Standing near the dangsannamu, the village guardian tree, in front of Sandong-ri village, this phallic stone is 1.65m high and 1.45m in circumference and is finely carved from granite. It takes the form of a sturdy man's fully erect penis, and is unusual in having a lotus pattern carved at its base. A legend holds that about 500 years ago a female strongman carried two phallic stones wrapped in her skirt; finding them too heavy, she abandoned one at Changdeok-ri and set up the other here. The exact date of its erection is not known, but it is a notable work, carved with far greater delicacy than other phallic stones.
