Provincial Folklore Heritage

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a farmhouse of the Andong region, a thatched-roof house with walls of rammed earth (todamjip). It originally stood in Sawol-dong, but was moved to its present location in 1976 owing to the construction of Andong Dam. The house was built without pillars, its walls raised using the panchuk method, in which earth is packed between boards and tamped firmly, or piled up on either side of a board. Timber was used only for structural members such as the purlins, rafters and door frames. Its thick thatched roof effectively keeps out the cold and the heat, giving the house a comfortable living environment.
