Asan Yun Seung-gu House
아산윤승구가옥 · 牙山尹勝求家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOn a low hill rising to the south, a cluster of upper-class houses built by members of the Haepyeong Yun clan forms a small hamlet. Known as 'Jongga-daek', the head house of the clan, this house was built in 1844, the tenth year of King Heonjong. Passing through the tall gate (sotdaemun) shared by the whole village and following a small path, one finds to the left the Birthplace of President Yun Bo-seon, Asan (a National Folklore Heritage); next to it stands the Yun Seung-gu House, and further up the slope is the Yun Je-hyeong House (a Chungcheongnam-do Folklore Heritage). To the right stands the Yun Il-gu House (also a Chungcheongnam-do Folklore Heritage), the whole forming a single cluster of houses. At the very front of the Yun Seung-gu House stands the sarangchae, the men's quarters, facing south; it measures three bays across the front and three bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof whose profile, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 八. Beside it is the mungan-chae, the gate quarters, three bays wide and one bay deep, fitted with a middle gate. Just inside the middle gate a wall has been built flush with the end of the gate quarters so that the inner quarters cannot be seen; following this wall round to the left brings one to the inner courtyard. The anchae, or inner quarters, is an L-shaped building four bays across the front and two bays deep. Centred on a wide, two-bay daecheong (wooden-floored hall), it has a geonneonbang, a room across the hall, to the right, and the anbang, the main room, to the left, with a one-bay kitchen set in front of the anbang. Beyond the wall to the left of the anchae stands a detached annex four bays across the front and two bays deep. The house is, on the whole, simply built using well-finished timber members.
