Changdeongninamgeunseok
창덕리남근석 · 昌德里男根石

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA namgeunseok is a natural rock shaped like a male sexual organ, or one carved and erected for that purpose; it is an object of folk belief invoked to pray for good fortune and for fertility, bountiful harvests and plentiful catches. The Changdeok-ri phallic stone is carved from granite, 165cm high and 145cm in circumference, with the foreskin carefully rendered and a lotus pattern carved at its base. According to a legend handed down, about 500 years ago a beggar lived in Taechon village who, because of his low social standing, could neither marry nor have a sexual life; in his despair, he is said to have erected this phallic stone. It was believed that a woman unable to bear children could obtain one by praying devotedly here, so that every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month many people would come to visit the site. The maker and the date of manufacture are unknown, but the stone is notable for being carved with greater delicacy than other such stones.
