Boseong Yi Jong-seon House
보성이종선가옥 · 寶城李鍾善家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn old house set with a bamboo grove at its back. The anchae, the main house, was built in 1908, and the other buildings somewhat later. The anchae has the straight, single-row layout common to this region, and with the lower house and shed house set to its left and right in front, the whole forms a U-shaped plan. The sarangchae, the men's quarters, is placed to the right of the entrance, facing north, with the sarang courtyard in front of it. The anchae is a double-row house of seven bays, a large-scale building with eaves bays front and back, and a hip-and-gable roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character 八. From the left it is arranged as kitchen, large room, daecheong (wooden-floored hall) and small room. The daecheong is divided into an inner floor and an outer floor, the inner floor being used as storage space. The eaves bay in front of the kitchen has an earthen floor, known as a bongdang, and it is interesting that a shelf of bamboo slats has been set in front of it. The heated ondol rooms are fitted with lattice doors of horizontal strips, and of the floored bays one is left open while the other two have panelled doors set above a low sill, giving the house a varied appearance. The sarangchae is likewise a straight, single-row house of four bays, arranged in the order room, room, kitchen and storeroom. At its eastern end the roof is hipped, tiled in a sloping triangle on the gable side as well, while the western end is a gable roof shaped like the character 人, so that the two ends differ strikingly from one another. The house has no surrounding wall, being instead naturally enclosed by the bamboo grove. Although the sarangchae and shed house have been somewhat altered, the house remains a fine example illustrating the character of an early twentieth-century gentry house in the southern region.
