Jo Clan Old House in Sangjeong-ri, Uiryeong
의령 상정리 조씨고가 · 宜寧 上井里 曺氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house (jongga) of the Changnyeong Jo clan, built in stages from the 17th to the 20th century. It is a typical wealthy farmhouse, its buildings arranged around the anchae (main quarters) in a square (mia-shaped) plan with one side left open. In addition to the anchae there are nine further buildings, including a sarangchae (men's quarters), a haengnangchae (servants' quarters), storehouses and a treadle-powered mill house, a family shrine, a detached building, a stable, and a gate house. The anchae measures five kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (eight). From left to right it is arranged with a kitchen, a large room, a daecheong (wooden-floored hall), a geonneonbang (room across the hall) and a numaru (raised wooden floor), with a kitchen-side room placed in front of the kitchen, forming a gyeopjip (double-depth house) layout. The structure and detailed style of the buildings clearly reflect changes over time, giving the house high value as comparative material for studying architectural characteristics century by century.
