Choehyeokjae Hall Old House, Boeun

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building's construction date is recorded in the ridge-purlin inscription as 1849, the 15th year of King Heonjong, which makes it earlier than the nearby Choegamchaldaek (Choe Gamchal's House) and gives it great value; in particular, the dimensions and joinery of its timber members are excellent. It also shows members and framework with better consideration for structural stability than the later, thatched Choegamchaldaek. However, the sarangchae (men's quarters) and other outbuildings were lost to fire, and although some members show signs of replacement, the condition of the members, the woodworking techniques and the floorboards of the wooden-floored hall clearly display old-style joinery methods characteristic of the Joseon dynasty. The main house (anchae) is a single-eaved, hip-and-gable-roofed tile house measuring five and a half bays across the front and two bays on the side.
