This stone jangseung (guardian post) stands beside a stream about 500 m from Hogi village towards Yukmojeong Pavilion; the village calls it "Mireuk" or "Mireukjeong." It is 270 cm tall and 221 cm in circumference. It has no neck, and a monkey-like face is set against its chest. It wears a paengnaengi, a cone-shaped hat woven from bamboo strips once worn by commoners, and has large round eyes, bulging cheeks, a big fist-like nose and a smiling expression. According to legend, Mireuk, the Buddha of the Future, once appeared in the dream of a woman who had been unable to bear a son, promising her one if she built him a house; after she gave birth to a son, the family built the house in gratitude. It is not known when the jangseung was first erected. It had been lying in a nearby rice paddy until Kim Geun-su set it up at its present site around 1850, the first year of King Cheoljong of Joseon. Each year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, his descendants gather to hold a memorial rite for it.
