Yonggang-dong Jeong Gu-jung House
용강동정구중가옥 · 龍江洞 鄭求中 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a hanok residence built on a narrow site, with the main house (anchae), the servants' quarters (haengnangchae) and a separate detached hall (byeoldang) built apart from one another; it is also a rare example of a gaeryang hanok (modernised traditional house) from after the 1920s. On entering the outer gate, there is a further gate building, and only after passing through the inner gate does one reach the main house. The haengnangchae at the gate, unlike the usual straight (one-shaped) plan, was built with a curve, and to the south of the gate there are two rooms and two storerooms. One of the storerooms has now been converted into a room. The main house has a paljak (hip-and-gable) roof, whose side roofline resembles the Chinese character 八 (meaning "eight"), and its windows and doors have mostly been replaced with modern ones. The gate building and the detached hall have matbae (gable) roofs, whose roofline viewed from the side resembles the character 人 (meaning "person"). The house shows the rich flavour of traditional hanok structure arranged intricately within a narrow, constrained urban plot.
