Dopyeonsu Yi Seung-eop House in Samgak-dong
삼각동 도편수 이승업 가옥 · 三角洞 都片手 李承業 家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built by Yi Seung-eop, who served as dopyeonsu — the master carpenter in charge of all carpentry work — during the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the late Joseon period. It was built in the 1860s. Originally the outer gate quarters and the servants' quarters surrounded the main women's quarters (anchae) and the men's quarters (sarangchae), but today only the anchae and sarangchae remain. The anchae is an L-shaped building. Centred on the daecheong, a wooden-floored reception hall, it has the main room (anbang) to the left, with the kitchen running on in a long line where the building turns the corner. The geonneonbang, the room across the hall, lies to the right of the daecheong and is divided, front and back, into two rooms. A distinctive feature is the roof, one side of which is long and the other short — a roofline of differing lengths not otherwise found in Seoul.
