A seonghwangdan is a cone-shaped mound of stones piled up at a village entrance or a mountain pass, believed to protect the village as a guardian deity. This seonghwangdan is 4.6 m high, with a base circumference of 24.3 m. It takes the form of a jeokseokchong, a mound built up in layers from countless stones. According to a story handed down locally, five hundred years ago a dragon-horse of Gitdaebong Peak, together with a child, built it as a horse's grave. Every year, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the village holds a communal ritual there.
