The sarangchae (men's quarters), built on a straight, ㅡ-shaped plan, and the anchae (women's quarters), built on an L-shaped (ㄱ-shaped) plan, stand side by side, the two spaces clearly separated by a haengnangchae (servants' quarters) and a wall. Their entrances are likewise kept apart: the inner gate leads to the women's quarters and the men's gate to the men's quarters, while a middle gate set in the wing of the L-shaped haengnangchae connects through to both the men's quarters yard and the inner yard. The whole site is enclosed by walls, with a steep slope behind the house. The wall along the front of the site and the dividing wall are built of rough fieldstones, while the rear wall is an earthen wall topped with rafters and Korean-style roof tiles. The Yu Sang-muk House is a traditional house of the yangban (scholar-official) class that survives in the Seosan area.
