This is a Joseon-period upper-class house. According to the record written on the building's ridge beam, the sarangchae (men's quarters) was built in 1773, the 49th year of King Yeongjo, and the anchae (women's quarters) in 1886, the 23rd year of Emperor Gojong. The complex originally comprised the anchae, sarangchae, araechae (lower house), mungan-chae (gatehouse), bakkatchae (outer house) and seojjokchae (west house), but over time it was turned into a farmhouse, and most of the buildings are now given over to farming-related use. The anchae has a rare L-shaped (gopae-jip) plan among upper-class houses of the Jeonbuk region, and one bay of its daecheong (wood-floored hall) is currently left empty and used as a shrine. The sarangchae has a straight-line plan, with a small inner room formed by partitioning off the north side of the central room, and is used as living space. The mungan-chae has been converted into a storehouse, and the bakkatchae was rebuilt in brick to house a cattle shed, storehouse and bathroom. The araechae likewise serves, together with its wall, as a storehouse, pigsty and cattle shed, while the seojjokchae has been fitted out with a room and a gwang (storehouse) as storage space. This house offers good material for tracing how an upper-class house of the Joseon period was transformed in the course of modernisation.
