Located at 927 Hangnim-ri, Hail-myeon, Goseong-gun, the head house of the Choe clan in Hangnim-ri, Goseong was built when the family settled in Hakdong village, Hail-myeon, about 330 years ago. It was constructed by first raising a stepped retaining wall of earthen walls and flat stones layer upon layer, and then building the house on top of it, a distinctive and unusual style not found in other regions. The complex includes an inner quarters (anchae) and a men's quarters (sarangchae), a storage building (gobangchae), a storehouse well built of earthen walls, a kitchen garden, the stone retaining walls characteristic of the village, a chicken coop roofed with earthen wall and broad stone slabs set atop the retaining wall, and, behind the anchae, a terraced earthen platform holding the soy-sauce jars, which is considerably spacious and conveys an air of antiquity.
