Hwang Yun-seok Birthplace
황윤석생가 · 黃胤錫生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building is the birthplace of Yijae Hwang Yun-seok (1729–1791), a great master of Silhak (Practical Learning) in the late Joseon period. It was built by his father, Hwang Jeon, and today the main hall, the sarangchae (men's quarters) and the gate quarters remain. The main hall has a six-bay front with toetgan (narrow veranda bays) added at front and back, forming a five-ryang roof-truss frame. Its straight-row wall is notable for its formal finish: between the floor of the inner room and the jungbang (middle rail) the wall is entirely finished in solid board, while between the jungbang and the lower rail it is fitted with raised panel latticework set on tall short posts, giving the house a dignified appearance. Originally the sarangchae stood behind the main hall, but only its site now remains; the sarangchae and gate quarters, having been destroyed, were rebuilt in 1909. Carrying on a family tradition of distinguished scholarship and conduct passed down through generations, Hwang Yun-seok studied under the leading scholars of his day, Baek Si-myeo, Baek Si-deok, Park Pil-ju and Kim Won-haeng, and associated with Jeong Hu, Yun Bong-gu, Yang Eung-su, Kim Si-chan, Kim Su, An Hyeong-ok, Seo Myeong-eung, Jeong Gyeong-sun, Jo Jeong, Yun Chang-jeong, Yi Gan, Kim Yong-gyeong, Kim Seong-beom, Kim I-sin, Sim Yu-jin and Kim Gwang-han. Through them he gained mastery ranging from the Book of Changes, numerology, human nature and principle, to phonology, dialects, songs, geography, costume, systems of measurement, genealogy, institutions, military formations, calligraphy, medicine, geomancy, agricultural affairs, Buddhism, botany and epigraphy. His writings include the fourteen-volume Ijae yugo, the twenty-three volume Isu sipyeon, the Jajirok, and the Suphil ilgi (a diary of essays), among others. His official posts included Chambong, Jikjang, Byeolje, Ikchan of the Crown Prince's Guard Office (Ikwisa), Dongbu dosa, magistrate of Mokcheon, and Jeonhuiryeon-gam.
