King Yejong Pavilion King Placenta Chamber and Stele
예종대왕태실및비 · 睿宗大王胎室및碑

This is a stone chamber where the placenta (tae) of King Yejong of Joseon was buried. In the royal family, when a child was born its placenta was carefully buried in a stone chamber known as a taesil, or placenta chamber. This taesil originally stood on the hill behind Taesil Village, Wondeok-ri, Gui-myeon, Wanju-gun, and was relocated to this site. It consists of a foundation stone set within an octagonal stone railing, topped with a round stone and covered by a roof stone. The stele was moved together with the taesil. Its front and back faces are inscribed respectively with a text identifying it as King Yejong's taesil and with the date of its erection, the eleventh year of King Seonjo, 1578. The stele is notable for its well-preserved tortoise-shaped base and its capstone carved with a hornless dragon. This taesil and stele illustrate clearly how the royal court dealt with the placenta.
