Taejangjaesa is a ritual house built to guard the tomb of and hold memorial rites for Kim Seon-pyeong, Taesa (Grand Preceptor), the founding ancestor of the Andong Kim clan. It was built by his descendants in 1750, the twenty-sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, but water shortages and recurring illness led the family to demolish the original monk's quarters that had stood there and rebuild the house in 1793, the seventeenth year of King Jeongjo. Ten more bays were added in 1913, and the house was repaired again in 1960. "Taejangjaesa" refers to the whole complex, made up of the ㅁ-shaped (square-plan) ritual house itself, the one-line (一-shaped) Isangnu Pavilion, and a ㄷ-shaped (U-plan) management house. The ritual house stands one level higher than the inner courtyard. Awnings are fitted at the eaves to keep off sun and rain, giving the building a plain, frugal character. Inside the ritual house are a steward's room where offerings are prepared, a hall for ritual food (jeonsacheong), and a room for the officiants (chamjewonsil). Isangnu Pavilion, at the front of the complex, is used for eating after the rites and for holding clan meetings. Among the ritual houses of this region it is relatively large, with each part clearly divided according to its function; memorial rites are still held here every year on 10 October.
