Gyoryongsanseongseungjangdongin
교룡산성승장동인 · 蛟龍山城僧將銅印

Gyoryongsanseongseungjangdongin is a bronze seal bestowed on the monk Cheoyeong. When the Japanese invasions of 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, broke out, Cheoyeong became commander of the monk-soldiers at Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, greatly reinforcing the fortress and preparing it against the fighting. In recognition of this, the royal court had this seal engraved and bestowed it on him as proof of his appointment as a special commander (sanseong byeoljang) of the mountain fortress. The seal was passed down through generations of abbots of Seonguksa Temple within the fortress, until it was lost while the Donghak Peasant Revolution leader Kim Gae-nam was using Gyoryongsanseong Fortress as his base. It was rediscovered in 1960 by the monk Bowol, then the temple's abbot, and has remained there ever since. It measures 6.3 cm wide, 7.8 cm long and 1.5 cm thick, with the seven characters "Gyoryongsanseong Seungjangin" (蛟龍山城僧將印) engraved in two vertical lines. A handle 6.5 cm high is fixed to the rectangular plate. Thought to have been made around 1593, the year after the Imjin War broke out, it survives in its original form, though the case that once held it has been lost.
