Kim Sang-hyeop House in Hyehwa-dong
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the house of former Prime Minister Kim Sang-hyeop, built around 1930, consisting of an anchae (main women's quarters), a jungmunchae (middle-gate building), a sarangchae (men's quarters) and a byeolchae (separate annexe). The building retains well the characteristics of the urban-style hanok of the late 1930s: features such as the retaining wall built on the raised site, with stone steps leading up to the main gate, and the signboard placed at the side entrance to the sarangchae, are techniques typical of urban housing of this period. As it fully reflects the site layout and the hanok characteristics of this period, the building allows comparison with the development of traditional hanok architecture over the course of the late Joseon period.
