Namwon Seokdon stands inside Namwon Post Office. It is a dangsan, an altar-shaped village guardian mound, built by stacking a granite gidan (base platform) and piling rectangular stones on top. The Yongseongji, a local gazetteer, records that it was used as a place to worship the dangsan deity, said to protect the old fortress town. According to tradition, there was once a large stone mound called Seokdon behind Yongseonggwan (near present-day Namwon Station). The area was thickly wooded, and birds used to gather there. Later, when government offices were built on the site, the mound was demolished: the stone was used as building material and the earth was used to level the ground. It is said that from that time the village stopped producing talented people. The date it was first built is unknown. Its present form dates from 1986, when the part of it that had been destroyed during the rebuilding of the post office was restored.
