Shrine Hyeonggamsil held at Onyangminsokbangmulgwan
온양민속박물관 소장 사당형감실 · 溫陽民俗博物館 所藏 祠堂形龕室

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe gamsil, a miniature shrine cabinet for enshrining ancestral tablets, has the structure of an ordinary dwelling, with four kan (bays) across the front and one kan to the side. The four front bays are not divided into separate rooms; each measures 43 cm, planned to a single uniform scale without distinguishing a central bay from flanking bays. In front of each bay stands a round timber column, 10.5–11 cm in circumference, set forward by one bay, five columns in all; a railing is fitted 21 cm in front of the inner columns to finish the front. All four front bays are fitted with folding gyeokja gyoseonmun, lattice-patterned doors. On the side elevation, a column 2.8 cm thick divides the bay into a front section 19 cm deep and a rear eokan (central bay) 40 cm deep; the upper part of the wall is triangular, and the walls throughout are closed with wooden boards. The inside of each front flanking bay is finished with a painted mural. The floor is laid with two long boards running side to side to form a wooden floor, with a railing above it; the railing is made up of 21 lotus-leaf-carved supports in total. In form, the Shrine Hyeonggamsil held at Onyangminsokbangmulgwan is a four-bay gamsil for rites honouring four generations of ancestors, and structurally it faithfully reproduces the full timber joinery of a dwelling house, finished with dancheong, traditional decorative colour painting. Among wooden ritual objects the gamsil is relatively large; structurally it closely follows the joinery techniques of timber-framed houses, and its dancheong work is also of fine quality. It is thought to be the result not of one craftsman's work but of the joint effort of several artisans: at least a daemokjang, the master carpenter who builds the frame, a somokjang, the master joiner who makes fine fittings, and a dancheongjang, who painted the dancheong.
