Gimjeonghoe Old House
김정회고가 · 金正會古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house where Bojeong Kim Jeong-hoe (1903–1970), a leading scholar and calligrapher of the Japanese colonial period, lived. It is said to have been built around 1862, the 13th year of King Cheoljong, and that the family had lived there from the time of his great-great-grandfather. The house today consists of an anchae (main women's quarters), a sarangchae (men's quarters), a munganchae (gatehouse), a sarangchae, a shrine and storehouses. The anchae, six kan (bays) across the front and three kan to the side, has a paljak roof whose side profile resembles the character for "eight" (八); one kan was added to each end at a later date. Built higher than the inner courtyard, the anchae's style is unusual compared with other houses. The sarangchae in front of the anchae is a paljak-roofed building four kan across the front and three kan to the side. The haengnangchae, which appears to have been built much later than the anchae and sarangchae, measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, with a plain matbae gable roof whose side profile resembles the character for "person" (人). There is one storehouse building on each side of the anchae, and a shrine stands behind it. It is a typical upper-class house of the late Joseon period.
