Seungjujosun Stand House
승주조순탁가옥 · 昇州趙淳卓家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of the Sanghojeong branch of the Okcheon Jo clan. It was built in 1855, the sixth year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, by Jo Byeong-ik, and consists chiefly of a sarangchae (men's quarters), anchae (women's main quarters), haengnangchae (servants' quarters) and a detached wing (byeolchae). Passing through the haengnangchae, which holds the main gate, one finds the sarangchae standing alongside the haengnang courtyard; a further inner gate behind it leads to the anchae, beside which stands the byeolchae. The haengnangchae measures five bays across the front and one bay deep; with the main gate in the centre, two bays on one side serve as the gatekeeper's room and the remaining two bays as a stable. The anchae measures six bays across the front and is roofed with a paljak, or hip-and-gable, roof, whose silhouette from the side resembles the Chinese character 八 ("eight"). The sarangchae measures four bays across the front and two bays deep, and is roofed in the same paljak style as the anchae. Unlike the traditional yangban houses of this region, which were influenced by the yangban houses of Gyeonggi province, this house has a wide, open inner courtyard. Built in the late Joseon period, it provides valuable material for understanding the domestic life of a yangban family at the time.
