The Sagongninamgeunseok stood originally at the entrance to Jagyeong village, and was moved to its present roadside location during land readjustment work. It is a granite shaft carved like a stone pillar; because its upper part resembles the glans of a penis, it is known as a phallic stone (namgeunseok). Its date of production is not certain. It is 200cm high, and its square-pillared body is about 28cm wide on each side, with a circumference of 113cm. The glans-shaped upper part is 37cm high, the eaves-and-base section is 16cm high, and the cap is 36cm wide on each side, giving the stone a slightly flared form. According to oral tradition, when epidemics were once severe in the village and public sentiment grew unsettled, the village elders, believing this was because the shape of the village resembled a woman's genitals, erected the phallic stone at the entrance to the village in order to suppress the inauspicious energy of the land's configuration.
