Changwon Jeong Clan Head Family
창원정씨종가 · 昌原丁氏宗家

This is the head house where descendants of Jeong Hwang (pen name Yuheon) have lived for generations. Jeong Hwang insisted that proper rites be observed at the funeral of King Injong, and as a result was exiled to Geojedo Island during the Jeongmi Sahwa, a purge of the literati, where he spent the rest of his life. The house consists of a main hall (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae), a servants' quarters (haengnangchae) and a gate. The main hall and servants' quarters were built in 1854, and the gate in 1927. Around the inner courtyard, the main hall, men's quarters and a shed building form an open ㄷ-shaped layout, with the servants' quarters set at an angle beside the men's quarters. Built as an upper-class residence spanning the late Joseon period and the Japanese colonial period, it contrasts with the nearby, smaller head house known as the Jeong Sang-yun House. Although built in the same period, the Jeong Sang-yun House is large and ornate, whereas this house, despite being the head house of a major lineage, is small in scale, plain and practical. Apart from the main hall, little has been altered, so the house preserves its original form relatively well.
