Yangdong Daeseongheon Hall
양동대성헌 · 良洞對聖軒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krStanding on a high hill, this house was built in the mid-18th century and consists of a main hall (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae) and a servants' quarters (haengnangchae). The ㄱ-shaped main hall together with the straight-line men's and servants' quarters form an overall enclosed, ㅁ-shaped layout. In the main hall, a long kitchen occupies the inner corner, with the main room and a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) to its right and a side room beyond. A narrow veranda (toenmaru) runs throughout, linking the rooms to the daecheong. The men's quarters stands higher than the other buildings and contains a daecheong bearing the nameboard "Daeseongheon" and a two-bay sarang room. "Daeseongheon" means "facing Seongju Mountain", and a half-bay-wide veranda runs along its front. The servants' quarters houses the gate, rooms and a space for keeping livestock. The main hall, men's quarters and servants' quarters are each separated by walls. Of particular note, the two bays in front of the men's quarters' daecheong are fitted with eight folding door panels hung without a central post, each set of four panels folding up together — an unusual arrangement rarely seen in other houses, and one that draws the eye.
