The earliest record of a water-powered mill (mullebanga) in Korea is the mill at Segeomjeong in Seoul mentioned in the Veritable Records of King Sejong; like most such mills, it made use of the drop in a stream falling from hilly terrain. The mill building at Ungyo-ri measures three bays across the front and one bay to the side. The weir that dams the stream is 61 m long, and the channel that carries the water from the weir to the waterwheel is 252 m long, 2 m wide and 2 m deep. The wheel itself is made of pine, 310 cm in diameter and 130 cm wide; it has forty-seven paddles which, instead of the usual straight '一'-shaped blade, were specially made in a bent 'ㄱ'-shape by the owner to increase the wheel's milling power. The mill has been partially repaired every year and so remains in good condition, and it continues to operate today.
