When the Manchu invasion of 1636 (the Byeongja War), in the 14th year of King Injo of Joseon, ended in what he felt was an unjust defeat, Gang Gak (pen name Doeun, 姜恵) withdrew into seclusion together with his elder brother Gang Heup (姜洽) at Yangchon, Beopjeon, to preserve his integrity; the house is accordingly also known as Doeungudaek, or 'Doeun's Old House'. It was repaired in 1798, the 46th year of King Yeongjo, and again some 60 years ago. The sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (main house) are arranged in an open square (ㅁ-shaped) layout, though much of the complex has fallen away over time. Within this square-shaped dwelling stand the main house and the men's quarters, with a jaesil (ancestral ritual hall) and a shrine to their left. The main house is the oldest building and stands higher than the men's quarters. Centred on the daecheong (wooden-floored hall), it has an upper room, the main room and the kitchen to the left, facing the men's quarters, with a loft to the left of the kitchen connected through to the main room. To the right are a storeroom and, in front of it, a small sarang room and a raised, open-sided floor (numaru), together forming a small sarang space. The men's quarters appears to have been built later than the main house and stands in a single row (一-shaped) in front of it. From the left there are a gatekeeper's room and the main gate, and then, as the principal sarang space, two heated (ondol) rooms and a wooden floor. This floor served as the place where the master received guests and carried out daily life. The jaecheong has a heated room and a wooden-floored room at the rear, an open floor at the front, and a balustrade running from the front round to the narrow verandas (toenmaru) on both sides. Having been repaired some 60 years ago, it is relatively well preserved, though part of its original form is thought to have been lost.
